Two Lady Knights Named All American

07/09/2010
By Thomas Vick

It is hard to imagine a season in which there could be more reward and more justification for the many years of hard work and effort than the 2010 softball season. The list of team accomplishment goes Wildcat Invitational Champions, Central Piedmont Conference Season and Tournament Champions, Sectional Champions, Western North Carolina Regional Champions, North Carolina 4A State Champions, and USA Today/NFCA National Champions. Individual awards include All Conference, All Conference Pitcher of the Year, All District, All State, All State Pitcher of the Year, All Region, and as of this afternoon Louisville Slugger/NFCA All American! Earlier today Hannah Alexander and Katie Vick were selected by a panel of coaches from across the country to the All American team. Joining Hannah and Katie on the team from North Carolina are Sarah Mooney from North Mecklenburg and Chelsea Wilkenson from Alexander Central.
The All American team candidates were those players selected first team All Region in each of the five regions earlier in the week. The coaches then selected the team by position with at large selections on each of the two teams selected and the honorable mention list. Hannah and Katie join 2 – time winner Danielle Glosson and Tisha Mahon as All Americans from North Davidson in the fast pitch era.
Who would have dreamed that the little girl that was too shy to throw a pitch to Billy “Chief” Gerald at her first pitching lesson would end up an All American. Hannah, I am sure that now the countless pitches you have thrown in mastering your craft to Chief, Brent, Damon, Chelsea, Whitney, Maggie, Smitty, and anyone else who would catch you are all worth while. Also, I am sure the demands of Chief, Brent, and Smitty to hit your spots time after time are well rewarded. I know how proud your mom and dad are and I want you to know how proud the coaches and your Black Knight teammates are of you. Also proud are your extended travel ball family, all the Lady Warriors and the Carolina Attitude. Great job Hannah!!
About eight years ago a ten year old bat girl asked her future high school coach to shorten her swing and help her become a good fast pitch hitter. The coach had just come back from the University of Arizona and decided to make her his first linear hitting pupil. Two years ago the coach asked the former bat girl, now high school player, to move across the infield from third base to first base on defense. Thousands of swings and thousands of ground balls later, Katie you are now an All American! Katie, your coaches and Black Knight teammates could not be prouder of you. Your mom, Lauren, and I are walking on cloud nine. Your travel ball family of Lady Warriors and the Carolina Attitude are so proud. Great job Katie!!

To the Black Knight Nation, we live in a special place filled with many gifted children. Let’s all commit to stand behind them and support them in all of their endeavors whether athletic, academic, artistic, musical, or whatever they are and encourage these children to give their passions their all. They will make us awfully proud!! GO KNIGHTS!!
