Mike Lock battles even with an arm injury

Mike Lock battles even with an arm injury

I apologize for the lateness of this article.  I fell asleep last night writing it and I just now, at 9:00 PM had time to sit down and finish it with all the weather situation has done to King of the Mat.

Welcome to the CPC!

This is the first thing that I could think to say to all of our young Black Knight wrestlers tonight after the drubbing we took at the hands of Davie County.

67 to 12 was the final score.

Was it really that bad?

Did we stink up the old gym that much?

After some time to reflect and take in what transpired, I believe I can honestly say that it was that bad, but I don’t think we stunk it up near as much as I did at the conclusion of the match.  We were again tormented by the fact that we work hard in practice but rarely seem to transfer the moves from the practice room to the wrestling mat.  We fall in love with one move and we try to hit it all the time.  We try to force it when its not there and after it hasn’t worked, we go right back to it instead of trying something different.  It seems at times that we don’t drill any moves at all and we just throw them on the mat without any training.  In a word….FRUSTRATING!

Kaleb Forrest in a big takedown move

Kaleb Forrest in a big takedown move

The match started tonight at 140 pounds.  Adam Lambeth took to the mat first for the Black Knights.  His opponent was defending state champion, Zach Vernon.  The match started and Adam took what may have been his best shot of the year and fought on the leg as long as he could, but Zach showed why he is a State Champion and got the takedown and pinfall. 0-6, War Eagles.

145 was the next weight class and Kaleb Forrest took on Trevon Faulkner.  Kaleb got the takedown and then preceded to turn Faulkner at will, amassing 14 points in the first period.  Kaleb got a reversal and got the pinfall in the reversal.  6-6 Tied.

Next up was Mike Lock at 152 and he took on Matt Garretson.  The first period was a feeling out for the most part, with Garretson getting a takedown.  In the 2nd period, we had choice and took top.  About halfway through the period, Garretson got a reversal and towards the end of the period he was able to turn Mike for a nearfall.  In the 3rd period, Mike had to use some injury time from a nagging injury sustained in his challenge match the day before.  Garretson was able to get another reversal and nearfall to close out the match.  6-10, War Eagles.

Cody Tysinger was up next at 160 and he took on Jordan Hendricks.  This was another feeling out, but Cody was able to hit a pancake and get a takedown and then get a nearfall.  Hendricks fought off his back and Cody hit another pinning combination and then another after Hendricks again fought off his back, but the 3rd time turning him was the charm as Cody got a pinfall.  12-10 Black Knights.

Justin Love was up next for the Black Knights and he took on Toby Lowe at 171.  This was a back and forth match with Lowe getting a takedown at the end of the period.  In the 2nd period, Justin took bottom and was turned but then fought off his back to get a reversal.  In the 3rd, Toby took bottom and was able to get an escape and a takedown that put Justin on his back and he was unable to get off of his back.  12-16, War Eagles.

Nick Lock

Mike Porrazzo was up next at 189 and he took on Jonathan Hupp. Hupp got a takedown and after a little struggle was able to put Mike on his back and keep him there for the pinfall.  12-22, War Eagles.

Tyler Beaver was up next and he took on Rickey Bell.  Rickey was able to get a takedown and turn Tyler, but Tyler fought off of his back but was not able to stop Rickey from turning him again and getting the pinfall.  12-28 War Eagles.

Matt Walker was up next and he took on Cole Blankenship at 285.  No one scored in the first period.  In the 2nd Cole took bottom and got an escape and then a takedown and put Matt on his back and got the pinfall. 12-34, War Eagles.

Nick Lock was next at 103 and he took on Trevor Albarron.  This was the 2nd match in a row with no score in the first period.  In the 2nd period, Nick took bottom and was turned one time for the first and only points so far in the match.  In the 3rd period, Nick gave up a reversal and then was denied in his reversal attempt but stayed off of his back.  12-37, War Eagles.

Brandon Gossett was next at 112 and he took on State Runner-up Mike Waters.  Waters got a takedown and was able to put Brandon on his back and keep him there.  12-43, War Eagles.

At 119, we had Seth Murdock taking on Jesse Hilton.  Hilton got a takedown in the first period.  In the 2nd period, Seth chose bottom and got an escape, only to give up a takedown.  Hilton cut Seth and then got another takedown.  In the 3rd period, Hilton took bottom and slipped out as Seth had a cradle locked in but sat the wrong way, and got the pinfall.  12-49, War Eagles.

125 was next, and Kagan Breedlove took on Shane Carter.  Carter got a takedown and put Kagan on his back and got the pinfall.  12-55, War Eagles

Former ND State Champion Brody Essick looks on during the first CPC match of the year.

130 saw Jeremy Hill taking on Kevin Whitley.  Whitley got a takedown and with seconds left secured his pinning combination that Jeremy couldn’t get out of.  12-61 War Eagles.

The last match of the evening was Justin Yarbrough taking on Tony Donati.  Donati got a takedown and put Justin on his back and got the pinfall.

Final Score, 12-67, War Eagles in total domination.

The young Black Knights got a taste of what things are like in the Central Piedmont Conference for Wrestling.  Davie County has had a hold of the Championship for what seems like forever, maybe stumbling a year here and a year there, but the Wrestling Championship is always determined by Davie County.

We strive to be a top tier team like Davie County, Cary and Parkland.  Tonight proved, while we may have improved each year we still have a long way to go.  It would be nice to have middle school wrestling like Davie County does but we do what we can with what we have.

The Black Knights drop to 4-6, while the War Eagles move to 18-0.

With the Cancellations today of all sports for tonight with the early dismissal and for tomorrow the Black Knights will be back in action at King of the Mat on Monday December 21 and Tuesday December 22.  The good news is, this will be at North Davidson!  We will have wrestling mats in both gyms for each day.

For Monday, the start time will be by 11:15 AM to try to let the weather situation improve a little more.  Admission on Monday is $8.00 and $10.00 for Tuesday.  Kindergarten and younger are admitted free.
